IEEE Bangladesh Section and IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group, IEEE Bangladesh Section and IEEE SIGHT organized” World Health Day 2019 Celebration” at ECE Building, West Palashi Campus, BUET on 7th April. The theme of the event was “Universal Health Coverage: everyone, everywhere”.


Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Department of EEE, BUET, Chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section and founding Chair of Women in Engineering Affinity Group of Bangladesh moderated the event. 39 accomplished professionals from more than 13 institutions joined the event. Rumana Ali, Member of the Parliament, People's Republic of Bangladesh, Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Department of EEE, BUET, Chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section and founding Chair of Women in Engineering Affinity Group of Bangladesh, Dr. Fariha Haseen , Associate Professor, Dept. of Public Health and Informatics, BSMMU, Dr. Samsad Jahan, Assistant Professor, Shaheed Suhrawardi Medical College, Dr. Tanzina Hossain, MD, Medical Oncology attended the program as honourable speakers to make this event a success.


At the very beginning, Dr. Samsad Jahan, Assistant Professor, Shaheed Suhrawardi Medical College, enlightened the participants with the importance of health Screening (checking blood pressure, height, weight, cholesterol, diabetes on a regular basis). Then she discussed the basic rules of staying healthy and today’s most serious and common disease Depression.

The honorable second speaker, Dr. Tanzina Hossain, MD, Medical Oncology, introduced the participants with the causes and symptoms of different types of cancer and of course about cancer prevention and the importance of raising public awareness. She also clarified that early detection can help in complete cure of some cancers. Her remarkable speech broadened the participants’ horizon regarding cancer.

Dr. Fariha Haseen , Associate Professor, Dept. of Public Health and Informatics, BSMMU, went next as the third speaker and gave an overview on SDG(Sustainable Development Goals) and Health, Mental illness caused by depression and anxiety and Potential Mental Health Issue. Her short but extraordinary speech helped the group to understand the severity of mental illness caused by depression and anxiety.

Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Department of EEE, BUET, Chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section and founding Chair of Women in Engineering Affinity Group of Bangladesh in her speech pointed out the achievements of her students in constructing some outstanding projects, done under her supervision, which can change the health of general mass in great ways. She demonstrated the design and implementation of - Auto-HRID: Automated Heart Rate Monitoring and Injecting Device with Precise Vein Detection, Stetho Phone: Low-cost Digital Stethoscope for remote Personalized Health Care and Smart Hat, safe and smooth walking Assistant for Elderly People. She also apprised the group that these projects are cost effective and very much appropriate for a developing country like Bangladesh.


As the fifth speaker, honorable Rumana Ali, Member of the Parliament, People's Republic of Bangladesh, took the floor and appreciated the whole initiative. She was very impressed with the whole organizing committee and the participation of so many professionals. Rumani Ali as the representative of the Parliament gave all the hopes that she will try to take as much initiative as possible to give the projects pointed out by Prof Dr. Celia Shahnaz justice and she will try to make them reachable to the general mass for use. She hopes engineers and doctors can come together more often with the motive of improving the lives of normal people.

Among the present professionals, the notable were Dr. Sanjida Hasan, Expert in Public Health and Population, Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah, Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, BUET, Dr. Bobby Barua, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, Anika Yunus, Professor, department of Water Resource Engineering, BUET, Shakila Yasmin, Associate Professor, Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka.

Undergraduate and graduate students from WIE student branches of different universities of Bangladesh including BUET, North South University, Prime Asia University, University of Liberal Arts, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, University of Asia Pacific, Independent University of Bangladesh, Institute of Science, technology and trade, and a number of male and female engineers from Robi Axiata ltd, Energypac Engineering ltd., Summit Communications Ltd. were also present in the event. The event enlightened everyone about the importance of Universal Health Coverage, a growing political movement to make health outcomes more equitable and health systems more resilient.


At the end, Anamika Bhakta, Vice President, Robi Axiata Ltd. and current chair of Women in Engineering Affinity Group of Bangladesh proposed vote of thanks to the speakers.
