Fire Safety Awareness Campaign

The risk of fire is one of the greatest threats to human life, property and the delivery of essential services in any community. The loss of life or property, as a result of fire, is a tragedy. Keeping that in mind, the first fire safety awareness campaign at BUET by the WIE affinity group, IEEE Bangladesh section was held on 13 November, 2014 at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, BUET. The aim of the campaign is to promote awareness among the students about the consequences and safety issues of fire hazards, especially in home and campus.

The campaign consisted of two parts. First a presentation was showed to the participants by MushfikaBaishakhiUpama, Senior Engineer, Energypac Engineering Ltd which illustrated with graphs and pictures the frequency of fire accidents in different countries, the scenario of fire hazards in Dhaka city and typical causes of home and campus fires.

Faulty electrical appliances, cooking, unlit cigarette and candles and damages to properties even in the highly developed countries. So the students must be prepared and aware. It also discussed about the first aids at the event of a fire and the emergency contacts for help during fire fatalities.

After the presentation, two videos were shown to the participants to demonstrate the disasters and damages home fire can cause. It is very important to raise awareness among the young generation regarding fire. Education and awareness on preventing fires is of paramount importance, since many fires are preventable. Everyone must take steps to protect themselves by learning about how to prevent home and campus fires and taking action. Especially the future engineers should be aware of this so that in future they can contribute through their works to keep the people safe from fire. This way, fires can be stopped before they even get started!
