IEEE Day Celebrated at IUB

IEEE Day 2014 was celebrated at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on 16 October, 2014. The event was jointly organized by IEEE Bangladesh Section, WIE Affinity Group (Bangladesh Section) and IEEE IUB Student Branch. Prof. M. Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor of IUB officially inaugurated the event as the chief guest and Prof. Pran Kanai Saha, Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section attended the program as the special guest.

Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah, Secretary, IEEE Bangladesh Section and Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Chair, WIE Affinity Group, Bangladesh Section attended the occasion as the guests of honor. Dr. Ali Shihab Sabbir, Dean, School of Engineering & Computer Science, Dr. Khosru M. Salim, Head, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Independent University, Bangladesh, Dr. Lamia Iftekhar, Counselor of IEEE NSU Student Branch and Dr. Abdur Razzak, Branch Counselor of IEEE IUB Student Branch participated the program among others.

After the rally and inaugural session, the day-long program started with the cake cutting ceremony followed by technical talks, seminars, project show competition, robotic challenge, matlab coding challenge and technical quiz competition. The members of IEEE student branches from Stamford University, IUB, NSU, AIUB, EWU, IUT and BUET participated in the event with great enthusiasm.

The technical talk was given by Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Chair, WIE Affinity Group, Bangladesh Section. She delivered a talk on “An approach of emotion recognition was from Facial Expression Based on Variance of enhanced Wavelet coefficients. She explained the importance of recognizing emotions from facial expression. Then she proposed a new method of recognizing emotions which is better in performance compared to the existing methods.

After the talk, she conducted an interactive session and the theme of the interactive session was technology for humanity and social awareness. Students were divided into groups and took part in a spontaneous mutual discussion over the topics related to health care and telemedicine for females, breast cancer awareness and prevention against fire hazards. The participants shared their views and ideas regarding these topics and also learned about the current technologies and campaigns involving above-mentioned areas.

The program ended with the prize giving ceremony among the winners of different competitions. It was an informative event, which through the exhibit of exotic projects, competitions and recreational activities, integrated the student communities from different universities to celebrate the activities and mission and vision of IEEE.
