1st WIE Workshop on Electrical and Computer Engineering

On December 27, 2012, WIE Affinity Group, IEEE Bangladesh Section organized the 1st WIE Workshop on Electrical and Computer Engineering at Huawei Lab, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The workshop included the research areas of signal processing, biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence and computer vision, humanitarian technology, computer architecture, semiconductor devices, telecommunication, power system and analysis.

The participants were required to submit a research poster based on their work and present the work in front of the judge and audience. Dr. Samia Sabrina, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology was present as a judge. Researchers from BUET, Brac University, Energy Pac engineering limited, American international University-Bangladesh, Bangladesh Power development board, Daffodil international university, East West University, Ahsanullah University of science and technology and Independent university have presented their work.

International eminent speaker and national WIE role model were invited to share their rich experience. Dr. M. Nazrul Islam, Assistant Professor, State University of New York at Farmingdale was the special guest while Dr. Dil Afroza Begum, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology was present as the guest of honor.

Both of them, along with Dr. Celia Shahnaz, chair of WIE Affinity Group, IEEE Bangladesh Section, described the hurdles faced by the female students in engineering education. They inspired the female participants and audience to work harder to transcend the gender boundaries in engineering. Dr. Pran Kanai Saha, chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section, Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah, vice-chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section and Dr. Mohammad Faisal, secretary of IEEE Communication Society- Bangladesh Chapter were present among the audience. The research poster titled “Classification of Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Persons Based on Time Domain Features Extracted From EEG Signals”, presented by KanizFatema, graduate student, BUET was selected as the best poster. All the participants received certificates as well. A souvenir containing all the abstracts of the presented research works was published. It was a successful event to showcase IEEE women’s achievements in academia and industry in Bangladesh.
